Great fit and ride
Recently, I was in the market looking to upgrade from my entry level roadie to something more formidable and something that reflected my interest level in the sport. Then I found the Cervelo S3. What drew me to this bike initially was the name and overall looks of the bike. Then I got to researching this whole "aero vs. light" debate. Aero was supposed to be meant more for racing with less emphasis on comfort and light was supposed to be meant for longer days in the saddle. After researching Cervelo's "S" or aero line of bikes, I found out that their more recent versions have incorporated endurance features from the "R" series of Cervelo's light bikes. What you get is an excellent blend of both comfort for long rides and plenty of stiffness for speed and acceleration. This bike is FAST. What I mean by that is the bike is incredibly responsive to your input. Every ounce of power you give it gets transferred to the rear wheel. When riding the bike, I get the sensation that it just wants to go faster (and it certainly can if you give it the juice). The only downside to that (for me) is it makes it difficult to do a moderately-paced group ride. I just want to leave everyone behind!! Its like trying not to drive fast in a sports car on an open road. On the comfort front, it is top-notch for being an aero bike. Its full carbon frame absorbs a lot of the road shock. The seat stays adapted from the R line keep the back end soft enough without losing any stiffness which is where a lot of aero bikes fall short. If that isn't enough for you, the frame can accommodate 25mm tires which have added comfort benefits. If you're not into the "aero" positioning, the stem can be flipped to raise the overall handlebar height and put you in a more upright position. In the end, I am very impressed with this bike. I took it out for its first 50-mile ride and had a blast. My comfort level was incredible as I felt I could ride a century (never done one before). In the next year or so, I plan on adding carbon wheels to the mix which will send this bike into the next universe. I feel like the bike offers the perfect blend of comfort and stiffness and I think I will be happy with this bike for a very long time.
After doing a lot of homework (and test rides), I decided to go for the Cervelo S3 due to the well-rounded nature of this bike. First thing I have to say is this bike is FAST. As advertised, the aerodynamics of the S3 is solid and from a pure riding standpoint it not only is easy to accelerate, but the S3 also seems to maintain high speeds very well on flats. This bike is also wicked fast on drops. Cornering is a breeze and it was also not as difficult to climb with the bike as some have suggested. From a climbing perspective, I don't see a huge differential between the S3 and my Cannondale SuperSix, which is a fine road bike as well. The geometry of the S3 is the same as the S5 but the bigger fork definitely adds to the stiffness and the thin seatposts are excellent. It dampens the road on rough surfaces and this bike handles poor pavement very well. The Ultegra 6800 is solid and shifting is smooth as you'd expect from a new Shimano groupset. The stock Mavic Cosmic Elite wheels are a tad heavy but they are pretty tough and are perfectly fine as training wheels. I plan on getting a set of Carbones in the future, but for now this is just fine as I don't feel these wheels are a huge detriment to my current needs (but eventually I will upgrade the wheels to get more out of this excellent frame). If you're in the market for a great all around aero bike performance with some of the perks of a top notch road bike, I strongly recommend the S3.
